History

The Oakland Blind Center was founded in 1939 as the Alameda Contra Costa Central Committee for the Blind. The Center was chartered in 1942 as non-profit corporation dedicated to serving the Blind and Vision Impaired Community of Alameda and Contra Costa County through education, training, social activities, and fellowship.

The Center’s first location was a storage room in a building at the corner of 40th and Grove in Oakland. In 1949 construction was begun at the Center’s present location, 3834 Opal Street. The Opal Street building was dedicated on January 28th 1950.

Today the Oakland Blind Center continues to build on six decades of service and support to the Blind and Low Vision Community, providing programs which strive to facilitate Blind and Low Vision Individuals in achieving lifestyles that are independent, productive, and fulfilled.
